UK Hallmarking

UK hallmarking is one of the oldest forms of consumer protection. It independently verifies the precious-metal fineness represented on a qualifying piece.

What a hallmark confirms

A UK hallmark is applied after independent testing of a precious-metal article. It provides evidence that the metal fineness meets the standard represented by the mark.

The marks to look for

A complete UK hallmark includes a sponsor’s or maker’s mark, a millesimal fineness mark and an Assay Office mark. Optional marks may also be present.

Independent Assay Office

The Assay Office is independent of CHANLO and tests the article before applying its mark. The office mark identifies where the piece was assayed.

When hallmarking is required

UK law generally requires articles described as gold above 1 gram and platinum above 0.5 gram to be hallmarked, subject to the applicable exemptions and rules. CHANLO will apply the legal requirement to each finished piece.

Why it matters

Hallmarking is evidence rather than a marketing phrase: it gives the buyer an independent reference for the precious-metal content of a qualifying piece.
